Social Security disability benefits allow millions of people to enjoy independence even though they are no longer able to be employed. Though the program is based on payroll taxes, meaning a person has to have worked in order to qualify for the program, there are occasions when a young adult who has not worked may be eligible. In these cases, people under the age of 22 who are not able to work may qualify for Social Security disability under their parents’ work credits. This use by a child will not affect that person’s future ability to use Social Security disability benefits himself should the need arise.

One of the many benefits of Social Security disability income is that those who receive it qualify for Medicare after a year. This means that the disabled person will not have to worry about health care expenses, because those will be covered under the Medicare plan. Medicare comes in two parts, Part A and Part B. Everyone who is on disability for a year or more qualifies for Part A, and it is provided to them at no cost. Part A covers hospital expenses. Part B is optional, and covers doctor visits and diagnostic tests. This part costs just a small amount each month, and the premium for it is automatically deducted from the benefits check.
