Social Security Disability Denied
The Social Security Administration (SSA) administers the federal disability income program. This program provides monthly payments to people who have a permanent or semi-permanent illness or injury that prevents them from working. Not everyone can apply for this program, however. To get SSA disability benefits, it is necessary to have a moderate work history. Like the Social Security benefits that are paid to retirees, a person needs to have worked enough to have paid a certain amount into the program through payroll taxes before becoming eligible to receive benefits.
Once a claim is approved, the applicant starts receiving a monthly income. The amount received is based on the average amount earned each month while the applicant was employed. Benefits can be sent in the form of a check through the mail, or can be directly deposited into the recipient’s bank account. In most cases, someone who is approved for benefits will receive them for at least three years before the SSA orders a review of the case.
The Advantages of SSA Disability Benefits
One of the big benefits of receiving SSA disability benefits is Medicare. This program is available after someone has been on disability for a year and provides:
- Full coverage of hospital stays
- Optional coverage of doctor visits and lab tests, for a small monthly premium payment
- Discounted prescription drug coverage, for another small monthly premium
If a claim is denied, it can often be overturned on appeal with the help of an attorney.
